I'm not sure if the guy was an economist or a political scientist, and I'm not sure which are worse. I was minding my own damn business after the European Union Center state of the union address given by Anthony Gooch Galvez, drinking some punch an munching on the food (which is always fabulous at these events) and talking to a fellow senior economics major about thesis. As is pretty typical at these events, we were approached by a much older fellow in a tweed jacket and nikes who started making comments on why all the women in the room were standing to one side and then men were on another. (This was not entirely true). He then went on to propose that it was because there were no movie-star-esque looking males there, which would obviously be the only thing that would draw our attention. He continued on by giving us examples of the topics we SHOULD be discussing (all rather trivial and stupid) and was not in the least pleased that we were discussing thesis and other EU talks we'd been to recently. Attempting to salvage the situation (and because I like to be able to identify these characters) I attempted to introduce myself and ask his name, to which he replied:
"Only if you kiss me. I'm not one to be giving up such valuable information for free"
To which I could only muster nervous laughter, a coy smile, and "I promise nothing."
I was then informed that my response was practically a negative score on his rating system and was then regaled of other, more successful responses women had given him.
ugh. creepy.
I think this is another reason I'm going into marketing and staying out of academia.

You should have told him you'd met plenty of other men there who were willing to give up far more for far less.
