TODAY'S TOPIC: MASTER CLEANSE DIET & RICE TREATS - YUM!!
An update on the "little pets" that I've kept near-hermetically sealed inside of the original plastic rice container. These "pets" are the natural by-product of what lives, eats, and shits inside of your rice. Ever wonder what those dark flakes are with your rice that you simply brush away or filter out? Those are saw-toothed grain beetles. Tiny beetles that embed their larvae INSIDE of many of the grains of rice, wheat, and other grain foods that billions of people eat. The key thing to these critters, is that they hatch in hot and humid temperatures, usually 75 degrees F. They go nuts and hatch like mad in temperatures over 100, like here in Texas. So if you love your rice but DO NOT want to eat them right along with it, here are some very useful tips on what to do with your fresh-bought rice.
RICE TIP #1: Examine your bag/container of rice BEFORE you purchase it for dark flecks. If you do see some, do NOT simply believe it is flecks of dust or rocks like you'd often see with pinto and other beans (which grow underground while rice does not). If you have only 1-3 such flecks, they are dead beetles and can be removed (but make your batch suspicious). Now keep in mind that usually over half of a bag of rice or grains contains possible larvae in them, so you won't be able to get a bag w/o some form of infestation. Be it beetles or other critters.
RICE TIP #2: After you've purchased a relatively "clean" <sic> bag/container of rice and returned home, IMMEDIATELY put that rice inside the refridgerator!!!! The cold prevents hatching (which causes further infestations), and prevents the hardy critters from infesting your pantry and other food items (they eat almost anything and reproduce rapidly). When ready to cook rice, simply use a scoop or pour what you need into your mix and put the container BACK IN THE REFRIDGERATOR. Do not leave a container out long enough to get heated and hatch!!
~~~~BTW, ANY FORM OF COOKING, BOILING, BAKING, FRYING (or whatever!) WILL DESTROY THEM AND YOUR FOOD IS THEN SAFE TO CONSUME!!!!~~~~
**Now, these brings me back to my update. Ever since purchasing a plastic container of restaurant-grade rice during the hot summer months in Texas, which incidently erupted with larvae due to high humidity as well, I've kept the container sealed and sitting near my computer to see just how long it takes for the infestation to die down. Now I started this experiment mid-year 2006. The infestation died down to 2-5 live insects during a cold freeze in mid-December. I also believe it was due to lack of oxygen in the container after so many thousands of others were born, bred, died, and were eaten by new ones. All of this from a container originally holding 6 pounds (2.7 kg) of rice, but for this experiment held about 4 pounds (heh, it took 2 pounds to figure out it was infested!). After the activity died down, I opened the container for 5 seconds to let some oxygen back in. Less than a week later activity resumed but only produced maybe 100 more larvae before dying down again. So in effect I'd say the infestation of ONE (1) batch of rice lasted more than six (6) months and held about 100,000 saw-toothed grain beetles. Imagine what this would do to national harvests in your country?
I'm sure by now some of you who frequent the SG boards and some of the SG's threads have heard of the Master Cleanse, which is a form of detoxification of the body using a series of flushes and teas. It is also known as the "Lemonade Diet", even though it uses 'lemonade' is sure is NOT a real diet but a form of fasting. On average you do lose a LOT of weight the longer you go on the MC, but you also do gain about half of it back when you resume normal foods and re-toxify your system again. You'd be surprised just how much water weight you hold when your body is toxified. As for myself, I've gained some unwanted water weight over my muscle weight, and see this as a fast-track method of losing the water weight and combining my very physical job with Billy Blanks' workout regimen I won't gain back as much water weight. Once I start a modified version of the MC (I plan on substituting the maple syrup in the lemonade with a liquid vitamin juice and taking the syrup with the teas), I'll be posting my status on here daily or every two days. For anyone interested in more information on the Master Cleanse, there are thousands of websites out there with data, or you can simply go to the Master Cleanse main website (with support forums!!!). You can download the free copy of the original MC booklet by Steve Burroughs (why pay for it when it's free?). The basic recipe for the MC is any form of Senna Leaf tea for the evening system flush, Grade B Maple Syrup (hard to find except online), lots of water, organic lemons (or limes for variety), Cayenne Pepper powder (helps expectorate your internal linings), and original sea salt for the morning system flush (near impossible to find some that hasn't been bleached or purified/refined of natural minerals). One health food grocery chain reputed to have all of the right stuff is WholeFoods. I plan on making a trip there today. More soon!
