My theory is that the film is Christopher Nolan's deconstruction of Martin Amis' narrative technique in Time's Arrow as filtered through the lens of Calvino's If on a winter's night a traveler. Kind of the logical destination for fractured narratives as seen in films of the mid to late 1990s.

What's always been interesting to me is that while he was poking fun at and examining the malleable nature of narrative he was also presenting a realistic portrayal of anterograde amnesia. Kinda amazing to get the science right when you consider it was made in an environment that typically handwaves away the science.
