New Years Resolutions; I never bought into them before. I always figured that if you were going to do something, go on and do it. Using the start of a new calendar year doesnt make it any different or special. Ultimately it really doesnt, but Ive come to learn that there just may be some value in the old and time honored tradition of making a new years resolution. Yes, I know, this is usually done on the first day of the year, but Ive been off for a week and had some time to think, I mean really think about things. Ive had to be honest with myself and admit Ive developed some bad habits that I need to break, not to mention all of those good habits I want to have that need to be cultivated. This will be a two part breakdown, the first are the things I need to stop doing, the second, logically, are the things I need to start doing.
New Years Resolutions, Part the First
1. Stop drinking.
OK, Ill give you a moment to pick yourself off the floor after that little revelation. Now, before I get any emails suggesting a good 12 step program I want you all to know Im not an alcoholic. At least Im pretty sure Im not. Yeah, Im almost 100% positive but what I am 100% positive is that I drink entirely too much. What I have is not a dependency; its a really bad habit Ive allowed myself to develop. If I can kill a full fifth in a day without blinking, its time to call it quits for a while.
2. Stop eating junk food.
Now this one is going to be harder than cutting out booze. Ive taken a look at myself and Im in shock at how much of this garbage I can pack away. To tell the truth, I think that this is probably doing more damage to my overall health than the booze. Ive ingested so many preservatives that Im non-biodegradable now. After I die you could easily put me on display like Stalin.
3. Stop playing so many damn video games.
Its getting shameful. I can waste an entire day and not do a single productive thing. Now doing that every once in a while isnt so bad, but its now become the rule not the exception and I have to stop wasting so much time when I have things I need to be doing. You know productive things like art, writing or just finding my natural part.
New Years Resolutions, Part the Second
1. Start drawing every day.
Now you think I would have started doing this already. If you had, of course you were wrong. This has a lot to do with my first little list; Ive been wasting so much time with those little gems that I havent had much time or motivation for anything else. The plan is that I must draw for at least 15 minutes, more is preferred, but a minimum of 15 minutes every day.
2. Get out more.
Im not sure how it happened but Ive become a hermit. The only thing left is for me to buy a goat and move into a cave. I have a cat, but his goat-like attributes do not include producing milk that I can drink while I flagellate myself with a willow branch as I sit in my own filth. Over the years, and Im not entirely sure how this happened but Ive become increasingly isolated and now its time to reverse that trend.
3. Get back to my artsy roots.
I used to be a fairly artistic guy. Not only drawing and other visual arts but I used to write, act and had serious interests in music and sculpting. I look back at the man I used to be and I kind of miss him. I liked that guy and I think its about time we reconnected.
Well thats it, at least I cant think of anything else and this list seems like a good place to start.
