Something missing from democracy is a mission, like a litmus test
'In the best interest of the greatest number of people and our planet, without infringing on the rights of the individual'
now as americans, we would probably put americans first, or limit it to the greatest good for americans, but that would be missing the point. Rights are something that could be debated, but for now all we have is 'created equal' and life liberty and the pursuit of happiness, when what we need is the direction that a government ought to give. I dont think we can rely on capitalism to do it alone - instead the system doesnt have humanity's best interest built in, without the direction necessary from a government.
On a different note, I was thinking about paying a friend to act as a wake up service. I had paid one of those online services before, $ 15 a month and a computer would call, and i would punch in a code for it to stop calling back, but i quickly got used to it. So the new deal i am looking for is to have this friend call, hopefully a live voice will help. part of the agrement is that payment relies on answering two questions, OR four missed calls, OR two messages left on my voice mail, all to ensure an earnest attempt to wake me. We will see how it works, i imagine we will get started on monday. of course i am paying more than $15 a month.
