Theres this documentary film called My One-Legged Dream Lover in which an one armed, one legged Australian woman, Catherine Duncan, travels to America to meet Amputee Fetishists. Days like today, I totally relate to that sort of logic. Theres a mathematical proof which dictates that something very difficult to obtain, though not impossible, will be much more desirable compared to something more easily had. I had this in mind when I had to console a good friend as to why she is actually not an unattractive loser who nobody likes.
This is a woman with a PhD in the sciences, who has been published several times in leading academic journals, who gets post-doc invites from universities all over the continent, and who hasnt turned 27 yet. Yet shes SO unhappy.
The thing is, though she works extremely hard, shes gifted, and this research stuff is naturally easy for her. She does not value her dramatic accomplishments it nearly as much as most of us would, because the level of investment just isnt that high. She also thinks shes awkward around men. The opposite is actually true. Shes sexy and successful, and believe me, that makes MEN (and some women) awkward around HER.
Of course, she just thinks Im being nice, and doesnt believe a word I say. Thats fine, I dont argue the point to death. Like Ms. Duncan from Australia did, sometimes you have to do something unusual to find people who think that YOURE the thing which is so hard to find, and therefore highly valuable. Especially if they see you for what you are, as opposed to what youd like to be.
