3 dollars and a dream (10-26)
Current mood: optimistic
On the way to work yesterday I was walking up Balcom Street. Balcom is right around the corner from my house. I walk up Balcom 2 blocks up to Main Street, and then I only have to walk 1 block to get to work. It's pretty convenient. While walking along the side of the street in block number two I came upon a dollar folded in half on the curb. If I see a penny, nickel or dime I will often keep walking. If it's a quarter I guess it depends on whether or not I'm about to do laundry soon and if I need quarters. When it's a dollar though, I find myself willing to pick it up. I stopped in my tracks. I glanced somewhat slowly and cautiously in each direction with my paranoid mind refusing to believe it could be this easy to have a buck. Upon reaching a level of satisfaction that this wasn't some kind of ruse, I picked it up.
After about 5 more paces I look down to see another dollar folded in half on the edge of the street. With less thinking and more action I quickly snatch it up from the street. It's a little wet but that's not much of a deterrent. I'd say that a day is off to a smashing start when you find $2 on the street but wait that's not all after another handful of paces I come upon guess what? It's another dollar folded in half. At this point I stop again and begin looking around. Was this some kind of joke? A game? I've just stumbled upon 3 dollars in a row on the curb.
Now for the over-analyzation part of this I'm going to turn this blog over to well me. Thanks to the horrible storm from 2 weeks ago people are still cleaning up from it, and many streets in the city feature a ton of tree parts and broken branches. The guidelines for the cleanup are that you gather all the broken tree parts and place them in front of your house right on the curb and eventually the disposal crews will hit your neighborhood and take care of it. The problem is that these parts are huge in some cases and many streets are loaded with these things in front of every house. Not only does it look surreal but it often blocks the sidewalks making it near impossible to walk down them. Now you've got people walking in the streets. It's not exactly the safest approach, especially on the more narrow streets, but is climbing over 10 feet of loose tree parts gathered together in a massive pile any safer? It's so bad on many Buffalo streets that I heard rumors of Halloween being cancelled. Of course the city can't cancel Halloween, but they're saying that to keep kids from trick or treating and getting hurt with all these fallen tree parts everywhere. I mean wee can't have kids walking in the streets at night trying to go house to house. Maybe they'll get it all cleaned up by then. I hope so at least. Getting back to my sudden fortunate walk to work, the bottom line is that I never would've walked in the street that morning if the storm hadn't occurred, hence I wouldn't have found the $3. So the awful storm that left me without power for 6 full days was now giving me $3 in a way. Life is funny that way don't you think?
After looking in every direction wondering what the heck was going on I picked up the 3rd dollar and was putting all 3 of them away when suddenly from across the street I heard a man's voice. "Found some money on the street have you?" It was a middle aged black man in his yard (well I hope it was his yard) with a robe and slippers on. Not knowing whether I should be suspicious of a sudden voice talking to me at this point I replied, "yeah, just 3 dollars". He smiled at me and bellowed; "now you need to go play the numbers!" I smiled and pointed back at him as if he just gave me a sweet idea. In fact he did. Forget the stock market, I was going to take this 3 dollars and buy 3 lotto tickets and see how far this luck thing will take me. My fairy lotto godfather was looking out for me and when he talks I listen.
Last night after work I went to a nearby store and purchased 3 lottery tickets. Two of them were for last night's New York state lotto which was for about 15 million. I used the other dollar for the Mega Millions drawing on Friday night. I think the Mega Millions is for 24 million but it goes off in something like 13 states across the country so that's why I dropped $2 of the $3 on the state drawing I had a much better chance at that one. Of course I didn't win last night, otherwise this blog would've have started a little different. I think it would have started with a picture of me taking the equivalent of a treasure bath with the caption reading "I'm rich biaaaatch".
With the 2 losers last night I am left with one Mega Millions ticket for Friday night. We'll find out then whether lady luck was giving me a crumb or the whole pie. Also we'll see if whether or not my fairy lotto godfather will be getting a nice surprise in time for Xmas. Let's just say I'll be giving him more than $3 if I win. Wish me luck!
