So I was planning on posting some gorgeous pictures of the Spanish / Portuguese border, but my friend's computer in Lisbon had a severe mental problem and would neither connect to the internet or shut down. I'll have to wait until mid-August when we all get back to NYC to get them from him and post them.
Back in Amsterdam. Animal stories of the day:
walking through Breda, on my way to a SPECTACULAR gothic church in the center of town, i passed a shrubbery/garden space on the side of the main road. Nothing strange in that. What was strange was the rooster croaking like a madbird in the middle of the shrubs. Just a free-range rooster being noisy in the middle of a nice suburban town. When i passed on my way back, two old ladies were trying to shoo a cat away from the garden. I watched their attempts for a few moments, and then we all realized that the rooster needed no help - when the cat got too close, the rooster would scream like mad and start chasing the cat, trying to peck its eyes out. The cat would retreat, look aloof, and then start to stalk again. This continued for about five minutes, when i realized no one was going to get mauled - boredom set in and i left. But I can now say that yes, I have seen a rooster fight a cat.
Second story - i have also now seen a horse piss prissily. I wouldn't think a prissy horse was possible, but i've seen it. The young (female) horse had her tail and back arched so high you'd think she was trying for a distance competition. Prissy pony pissing. Sounds like a good logo for a t-shirt.
No other decent animal anecdotes. Saw a cow evading a horny humper, saw a sheep concentrating very hard on standing up. Not too amusing, not too unusual.
Oh, and Portugal - wonderful country.
