Listening is so simple that it is hard. Do you agree with that statement? What do you find particularly easy or difficult about listening?
Kirby and Goodpaster failed to differentiate listening from hearing. They admit that the rate for one to understand speech can be about triple the typical rate of speech. However, we are completely capable to hear and process so much more than that. Any student of lecturing professors will admit that they have difficulty listening, or rather paying attention, to the entire lecture. Often times this is accredited to a bored or wandering mind. I submit that a moderately active environment allows for proper stimulation of the mind to maintain focus so long as the subject of focus is the primary stimulant. The entertainment industry knows this truth more than any other profession. This is the very reason that films and TV shows are given soundtracks; not only does it serve as a tone setter, but it keeps the listener/viewer attentive. A similar effect can be observed for those requiring other forms of mental focus. For example, a writer can sit hours upon end attempting to focus in an empty, white, silent room with little result due to lack of stimulation. If that same writer were to simply switch on a symphony they would prove to be more productive.
