Womens Euopean Cup Football,Sweden vs England
On Saturday I trekked off with a few assorted ladies to watch England vs Sweden at Ewood Park, in Blackburn. Ewood Park is a very nice ground, shame about Blackburn. The game was played in front of a record(for a European womens game) crowd of 25,000 fans, who kept blowing on their horns and hollering throughout the game. The plaintive sound of the horns sounded like a huge colony of seabirds, all desperately trying to attract a mate at once.
The football was damn good, particularly when you consider the England team were all amateurs. It wasn't as fast or as physical as the mens game, instead there seemed to be more emphasis placed on skill. There again, I am a Stockport fan, so I don't have much experience of skill to compare the womens game with!!!!
Unfortunately, despite their heroic efforts, England lost.
Following the game, a group of young scally girls(including one of about 4) were encouraged to sing the rather odd insult "The referees' got a willy" by their mother, and also "If you all hate Sweden clap your hands", on the platform at Blackburn Station. When they were confronted by a big Swedish girl, one of them blew her horn in the girls face while a little boy tried to hit her with an inflatable hammer. Thus did these few leave a marked impression on our Swedish friends, of the friendliness and hospitality of Blackburn folk.

Frankly, had I been on Blackburn station confronted by that spectacle, I know who's side I would have been fighting on.
