Russian Deli,Newton Heath,Manchester
I went to visit my friend Craig in Newton Heath, and whilst doing so visited the Euro Deli,an Eastern European Delicatessen on Old Church Street, off Oldham Road in Newton Heath.
The few people in the shop were all Russians, members of the small Russian community Craig told me live in this area.
The shop sold jars of many types of pickled vegetables gherkins, tomatoes, cabbage etc);tinned goods of various sorts (including beef, what looked like sprats);Kvass(a lovely drink slightly similar to Dandelion and Burdock, made from fermented rye);different types of bread(mostly rye) and assorted chocolates and sweets.
There was also a freezer cabinet containing frozen blini stuffed with curd cheese, potatoes or meat, and pasta with different fillings such as cherries or meat.At the front, just by the counter, was fresh meat and sausage.
Whilst we were there we were serenaded by awful Russian pop,CDs of which were stacked up opposite the front counter.
I helped myself to kvass, pickled beetroot, aubergine puree, chocolate, blini, Russian honey and black bread.Upon getting home,I tried the black bread, which was covered in some type of round seed. The seeds were horrible so I had to scrape them off.I like black bread, but I am not sure about this variety.
