Hag Night,Barrowboy and Banker,London Bridge,February 8
The name of this pub, situated pretty well opposite London Bridge tube station, would make an interesting piece of rhyming slang,or possibly even a "cottaging" scenario?? Its grand interior was festooned with Hogarth prints, and portraits of famous Englishmen. The pub could be seen from the tube stations entrance; God knows where I would have ended up if I had followed my mate Martin's fantastically confusing directions.
I reached the pub at about 7pm, by which time the party, on the mezzanine floor, was in full swing. Carolines face had a happy, rosy glow, partly no doubt caused by the prospect of the forthcoming nuptials, but also because she was absolutely steaming. Maybe that explained why, when I went down to get my second pint of Hoegaarden, there was none left.
Lesleys demeanor was slightly more sober. It was good of Alan Shearer to beat Newcastles scoring record the weekend before in her honour, but there again, given their season so far, they desperately needed something to cheer about.
Amongst the assembled throng were Anton and his blonde girlfriend, whose father used to work in Hong Kong. She told me that when they journeyed into more remote parts of the Chinese mainland, the local children pulled her hair to make sure it was real and rubbed her skin to see if the strange colour would come off.
Anton gave Caroline a large cigar , along with advice on how to smoke it and before long, she was puffing away happily, which without doubt gave her an added air of distinction. Her dad, with whom I chatted about Moscow, was also present, as was Eilish, ex-violinist for Seventh Harmonic and now for Sorrow, with her trademark pint of Guiness. Completing the trio of Manchester/Stockport folk (along with me) were Carina and Rachel. Musn't forget Hove's representative either,Mike S.
By the end of the evening I was pleasantly drunk. I left with Caroline, her Dad and Lesley; they were off to Berlin via Peckham Registry Office, I went back to Hackney.
