Chinese Cultural Centre,Manchester, "Come and See"
I went to the Chinese Cultural Centre in Manchester with Yokho, to see an exhibition of video installations by Chinese artists. Erika Tan's videos of green tinted Shanghai parks at night were lovely, very restful; and one of the other artists did quite an arresting series of short films depicting the life of seedy model in a European city, which looked like Paris.
We then went to the Cornerhouse to see the Soviet war film, "Come and See", which was released in 1985, 6 years before the Soviet Union collapsed. It is set in Belorussia 1943 and looks at life as a partisan through the eyes of a boy. The film is surreal, beautifully shot, brilliantly acted and absolutely horrible. Belorussia was devastated during World War 2 and since the Nazis regarded the inhabitants as subhuman, they treated them accordingly. The film is sometimes extremely difficult to watch and the tension is almost unbearable, but it is also beautiful.

that's definetely a good option...although it's always better when you can find those movies in special programs that some cinemas do....so you can watch them in a nice theater...sometimes they do, you just have to be really awake to catch those special features...
