I'm going to see Sonic Youth tonight at the Quest. This will be my third time seeing them; first not in NYC.
In 1996 Helium and Test opened; fell in love with Mary Timony, and, thanks to Test, realized that as much fun as it is to claim avant-garde noise jazz, listening to it fucking sucks.
Saw them again in 1999 at the Hammerstein Ballroom, gorgeous venue, amazing energy. The Youth played some way early shit that I didn't recognize and my friend randomly ran into his babysister from L.A.
Kind of interested to see what the crowd's going to be like; my guess is a bit older than most all ages shows, and a little more surly because they couldn't get into the Modest Mouse show at 1st Ave, which sold out about three decades ago.
I saw tickets for the MM show on Ebay going for 75.00 each. This is fucking insane. I like Modest Mouse an awful lot, but that's just a lot of fucking money for pure hype.
