I feel like the song was more about how the pursuit of these things will make someone who is searching for self worth in outside factors hurt themselves more in the end. I found this phrase to be a constant reminder to work on myself instead of using these things as a crutch; I often fail but still continue to try. Sorry for the long winded comment.
