Well, I made it to LA, and the friends that I'm staying with let me use there computer, so I'm updating! But the profile pic stays the same, sorry
-------------------------------------------------------------------
I always take Highway 101 to LA. Everyone will tell you that I-5 is faster, and they're correct, but I-5 SUCKS. Firstly, it's boring. Nothing to see. Also, when you get about an hour south of SJ, you come upon a horrible smell. Congratulations, you have discovered "cowschwitz." It's an enormous beef farm with 1000's of cows all crammed into an enormous pen. Even the most ardent carnivore will find this offensive.
So, just stick to 101. It takes about an hour longer, but it's worth it.
-------------------------------------------------------------------
SIGNS ON THE ROAD
"Xtreme Rodeo Bible Camp"
(that one's especially for Nixon )
"All things are possible to them that believe"
(that just sounds...wrong. Linguists? Help me out here)
"It's happening in Soledad"
(Soledad is known chiefly for it's maximum security prison. This sign has been there for at least 30 years, placed by a well-meaning chamber of commerce, probably)
-------------------------------------------------------------------
No trip down 101 would be complete without a stop in Buellton, location of Anderson's Restaurant, "world famous" for their split pea soup. You know they are, because you've seen the billboards for the last 300 miles.
Travel east a few miles, and you are suddenly in Holland. Seriously. It is the town of Solvang, which looks like a Dutch Village, with windmills and everything. It's pretty incredible. But no tulips?
Travel another few miles east, and you are in Santa Ynez. The Chumash Indian reservation, more specifically. And even MORE specifically, location of the Chumash Casino. I lost $25 to the Chumash braves this time. You've gotta love it...the natives are taking it all back, one greedy paleface at a time.
-------------------------------------------------------------------
You when know you've made it into LA county. You are immediately assigned a series of tailgaters. It's rather stunning the amount of selfish drivers here. Squeezing into impossibly tight lanes of traffic. The words "turn signal" don't even exist.
Safeway becomes Von's.
101 is now "the" 101.
But I made it to Barry & Janet's. I am tired, filthy, and the Necessitormobile's windshield is a hazy insect graveyard. But I made it.
