July 12, 1979 Chicago. A genre of music both died and begun it's rebirth. At the time, it was news more because it was a near riot and caused a major-league baseball game to be forfeited. But looking back now it was one of those situations where the glut of media and cultural focus on one type of music - disco - caused an explosive backlash. The phrase Disco Sucks would be around for many years to follow. What were the lessons learned?
Read any music-related topic on the Boards here at suicidegirls and you would most likely find a slam-post aimed at emo music. Emo is hitting it's rock bottom in a much different way than disco. I mean emo is not a household word or anything. Lord, even the 50-something set was doing the hustle and buying up Bee Gees records back then.
I can't help but wonder if we should all chip-in and rent a baseball park and place all of the Fugazi, Fall Out Boy, and any applicable CD's in the middle then BANG with a stick of dynamite like they did back in '79. Maybe then we can move past the emo-bashing and get on with it.
