Whats with all the "Stop Bullying" and "Anti-Bullying" PSAs? What ever happened to just punching a bully in the face? Does that not work anymore?
I posted this line on my facebook account and a couple of friends decided to respond by posting news articles about kids who were bullied so badly that they took they're own lives. Im not sure what the intent was but Im taking it as an argument to my point. As if to say, this is what violence accomplishes. But realistically, arent we arguing the same point?
If these kids had decided to stand up for themselves, do you think they would have committed suicide? I know how cold hearted that sounds, but realistically, we dont live in a perfect world where everything can be solved with logic and reason. I wish we did. But we dont and it cant.
Now before you call me a short sided prick (Which I take offense to. I am not short sided) let me give you some insight to the person saying this. I have always been short. But in elementary and junior high. I was the short fat kid with glasses. Needless to say, I got fucked with a lot. I was pushed around and bullied pretty much my whole childhood. There were days that I didnt want to leave my house. Until my parents gave me a kick in the ass and told me that it was going to keep happening until I stood up for myself.
They taught me that there is a difference between defending myself and fighting for the sake of fighting. They taught me that its never wrong to defend myself from someone who is attacking me. I remember the last fist fight I was in. I was 12 years old, me and some other kids were playing basketball (Yes, they short kid was playing basketball. I didnt say I was good. I just said I was playing lol) and a kid on the other team just shoved me to the ground. I got up, pissed off, and he just stood there with a smirk on his face that said "What are you going to do about it?" So I punched him in the face.
we scuffled around a bit, the teachers separated us and we both got suspended. When I got home and my parents read the note that the teacher sent home, all they asked me was "Who started it?" When I told my parents what happened, not only was I NOT in trouble, but my parents went to the school and got my suspension lifted. Good thing they didnt ask "who threw the first punch?".
Let me be clear, Im not saying to pop off and start punching people the first time someone annoys you. Im saying when all other options have been exhausted, there is nothing wrong with whoopin' someone's ass. My kickboxing and ju-jitsu instructor always said,"There is a reason that violence is a last resort... because it fucking works.
Admittedly, this is very easy for me to say because I dont have kids. But I will someday, and I have vowed that whether my child is boy or girl, gay or straight, my child will know how to throw a stiff right cross and how to choke a fucker out. I have told me girlfriend this and told her that if she has a problem with that, she better speak up now. She agreed whole-heartedly and we are on the same page as far as that is concerned.
Its my opinon that you can't protect your children from everything. But you can teach them to protect themselves. And teaching them that violence doesnt solve anything is fine as long as the next words out of your mouth are "But there are exceptions to every rule".
