Yesterday was awsome. I was involved in my first real demonstration. It turns out A an F retail store uses non-union Carpenters from out-of-state and pays them from $9-$14 per hr. So our Orange County Local organized a demonstration. We arrived at the store before the work crew showed up and set up our picket line covering all access to the building. After only three hours of marching and shouting, we not only shut down the job, but we managed to convince the V.G.M and the GC to get rid of the non-union carpenters and find a contractor who has the decency to pay Union Carpenters scale or at least prevailing wage. I have always heard that if people could stand together to fight an injustice they could prevail, but I have never experienced it firsthand. It inspired me to ask myself what more could I do to help secure more work for Union Carpenters and how I could become more involved in Organizing my Local. I shoud be going to a Union Finish Carpenters Commitee meeting next month. I am looking forward to it.
