I got the call this week. You know the one. "Buddy, I'm getting hitched. Buy a several hundred dollar plane ticket so you can be with me as I rub your face in the fact that I've found lasting love and you haven't."
Okay, I shouldn't be harsh. He's my oldest friend, and I'm honored to stand as his groomsan... especially since it will be a beach wedding and the only suit I might have to wear is a swimsuit. All the same, it makes one reflect on one's accomplishments.
So far, that's really not much. Last year my resolution was to improve my health. I had some foot surgery I needed and started swimming a bit to increase my cardio health.
This year, my resolution is to write something and try to get it published. I like writing. I'm creative. But I get depressed and tired easily... so I haven't published so much as a movie review in the last fourteen years. But I never really thought about it, either... obsessed with idle entertainments or fruitless pursuit of women. I still like the idle entertainments, but the pursuit of women part... well, I've decided that its too much work. So now it's work, video games, and writing. That's the plan, anyway. Logically, I should have a good handle on if I could get published or not. My stepfather is a rather acclaimed sci-fi book reviewer, and my list of aquaintences includes Scott Lynch, who has two books out currently; the first one is known as "The Lies of Locke Lamorra" (and is quite good). Maybe I'll end up writing a screenplay, though my ideas are generally too full of unconventional attitudes towards sex to make the cut for films or TV, I think.
And yes, Otoki, you can have a look when I've got something.
Always with the distractions, though. Tomorrow: Cloverfield. Saturday: Prairie Home Companion with my family. Sunday: Packers vs. Giants at the Frozen Tundra of Lamebeau Field. Okay, so I'll work on it... next week. Shut up.
