Thanks to research done by my new intern Rusty, I have learned two important things. Rusty is more competent than my last intern Trixie (who is far happier in her new position as my assistant) and the ABC Shows: "Big Shots", "Cain", "Boston Legal" and "Dirty, Sexy, Money" are not all the same show as I previously thought. "Boston Legal" has Shatner and is in a law firm of some sort because I seem to recall a trial of some sort. "Dirty, Sexy, Money" has Keifer Sutherland's dad. "Big Shots" will probably be cancelled before anyone has to care and "Cain" stars Jimmy Smits from the "West Wing" and isn't actually on ABC.
Rusty also revealed that I am now what is commonly known as "quirkyalone". According to this awesome writer and publisher of "To-Do List" magazine Sasha Cagen, it is referring to someone who enjoys being single (but is not opposed to being in a relationship) and generally prefers to be alone rather than dating for the sake of being in a couple.
Cagen coined the phrase in a magazine article in "Utne Reader" in 2000 and followed up on the concept in 2004 with a book called "Quirkyalone: A Manifesto for Uncompromising Romantics" and she sent me an email letting me know her new book is coming out next month. It's called "To-Do List" just like her magazine and website. I'm not going to make fun of her lack of creativity because I think I still owe her six bucks. According to her quirkyalones are "the puzzle pieces who seldom fit with other puzzle pieces. Romantics, idealists, eccentrics, we inhabit singledom as our natural resting state. In a world where proms and marriage define the social order, we are, by force of our personalities and inner strength, rebels."
It's not to say that quirkyalones are hermits because we know lots of people and are social butterflies, we just want to stay open to new possibilities. I've loved and been loved by more than a few and I hope that continues for the rest of my days. However it just doesn't seem to be in my nature to partner up for very long. I noticed that many of the folks Cagen mentioned as being quirkyalone are extremely talented artists which puts me in company I'm very comfortable with.
Al Gore has won an Oscar, Emmy and the Nobel Peace Prize all in the span of one year. I thought he had peaked when he invented the internet and won the popular vote in the 2000 presidential election and now boy, don't I have egg on my face. With such an accomplished and fulfilled life one has to wonder if there could possibly be anything such a person would want to accomplish?
I can't write about why Fifty Cent's album tanked anymore because I somehow got drafted into writing a music column for my friend's new site. He keeps telling me the name of it but I'm never sure what it is since it changes slightly every time he tells me about it.
A fun day will be had soon, so enjoy every moment of it.
