An update
Mostly what's been on my mind lately is that I dropped my Sony A350 in a river last weekend and ruined it. I tried putting the battery back in this morning but it was unresponsive. I'll cover it in cloth and put it out in my shed for a month and maybe the heat will evaporate the moisture out of it, but I don't really expect the camera to work again.
Accidents happen, but this particular one is directly attributable to my being an idiot. I am not sure how to address the question of life as an idiot, but no doubt my response to the question would be an idiotic one.
A couple hours before I dropped the camera in the river I had sent out the payment for a good macro lens so I could get into some serious macro work, having been inspired by someone whose work i'd seen at the paradise city arts festival. The lens came today. It's not as pretty on the exterior as the current model of that lens, but it's mechanically smooth and solid and has good optics. I could shoot some 35mm with it but that's not what I bought it for. I think I'll find a cheap sony a100 on ebay and that will have to get me by until sony's 24 megapixel slr comes out sometime this year, hopefully at a price point i can stomach.
Edit 7/9
Well I sent off for the A100. Found a new one pretty cheap.
There's a part on this cd I have, John Lennon Acoustic, where John speaks to a crowd, and he says "so flower power didn't work, so what, start again." and I guess that's probably the best thing to keep in mind when stupid shit happens that gets you down.
Also been thinking about how buddhism is described as the middle way. I hope now to let my spending drop off, not push my finances to the firewall all the time. Just live reasonably with mild desires, the middle way.
