good dream--in days of yore, pre-christian europe, winter solstice brought a ceremonial party where some random villager would be named king by lottery for 12 days of festival. he would get to do whatever he wanted, eat, drink and screw however he wished; he was the embodiment of the year that was ending, and at the end of the 12 days, he would be ritually sacrificed (not killed, though there is speculation that in even more olden times he would have been) to clean the slate for the new year. this kept up long after christianity moved in, until the rational thought addiction of the renaissance crushed the majority of the peasant religions.
