so...i pick up the light of my life, ambersaurus, from newark penn station and i'm heading home. it being a nice day, i decide to take the park home instead of heading up the straight and uninteresting main city street in newark/bloomfield, bloomfield ave.
just about to enter the park, when we catch a red light.
stopped dead, i'm third back from the light. the genius in the lead has decided, slightly too late, that he's not making the light and needs to back up out of the intersection. the even bigger genius right in front of me decides to back up and give him a little room. unfortunately, the drivers test she passed two months ago to get her license apparently didn't guage her ability to turn her head and look behind her.
crap! she's coming right at me and isn't stopping!
*keeeee-runch*
FUCK, my girlfriend is on the back!
i manage to keep the ole SV upright as long as possible, hopefully long enough for her to leap off the back and then give in and crumple in a heap along with my gleaming red beauty, slightly under the rear bumper of a mid-80's nissan.
unhurt, i leap up amidst ambersaurus' shouts of "STOP YOUR FUCKING CAR, STUPID!"
after a moment of stock-taking, i realize that my girl made it off the bike and is unhurt, i am unhurt, and i can begin to relax a little. we both strip off our gear, i call the police and hunker down to wait.
my favorite part of the whole accident...first cop that pulls up: bike cop
both my girl and I valiantly supress giggles at his arrival.
the officer was fantastic, both to us and to the other driver...and we spent the better part of 30 minutes chatting with him as he wrote the incident up as fellow riders are wont to do.
total tally: scratched forks, busted front fender, busted shift lever. nate's motoslider (motosliders.com) did its job and kept the pavement and the bike separate, nobody was hurt, and i couldn't be happier.
yeah i'm angry that i had to limp home shifting with two thirds of a shift lever, and that i have to spend some money temporarily to fix her on up before extracting the dough from the other driver (or her insurance company)...but i couldn't be happier because we all know that everyone goes down, and this is the best way to do it.
