Here I thought I would lose my last grandparent over Christmas of last year. I talked to family and her nurse and we all agreed that she was too stubborn to go during a holiday. The nurse and I felt she would wait until February, or so.
Well, this prediction is just about spot on. My grandmother is about to pass on. I saw her yesterday to say good bye. I read to her for a couple of hours, as she lay non-responsive and breathing heavily out of her mouth. I read Psalms to her; her favorite part of the Bible. I called the Red Cross so they can request my cousin to come home from the Army to say his goodbyes. My cousin is with her now. I called my mother and uncle, and used my cell phone as a speaker phone so they could each say their final words to her. I did all I could. If my work didn't impact all abused and neglected children and elderly in Florida, I would have skipped work and stayed with her. If she was responsive, she wouldn't want me to ignore my work. But I was able to help get her other grandchild down to spend time with her when she goes.
Over 25 years of Parkinson's took its toll on her.
She is on Morphine now. I am told Morphine is the last medicine they give someone in her state. Removes the pain, makes it easier to go.
