As I watch the results it is interesting how history happens. I remember listening to local politicians explaining why Obama will never be the President of the USA. This was 26 months ago, it was in Chicago, and it was before Obama announced his candidacy. Making history is always a matter to time, desire, hope, faith and consistency.
For those who did not believe American's can elect a human being other than a white-Anglo man - we have now advanced to a higher level of awareness. History has proved the American people can elect a human being regardless of his or her skin color, hair, last name, personal experience and upbringing.
What can we expect? Many Chicagoans will move to the DC area, set up camp, and learn the ropes of the Capital city - quickly to become player's national politics. I recall when Little Rock moved to DC during the Clinton administration, and when Dallas moved to DC eight years ago. I wanted to beat the rush and I now have an office on K Street.
The Obama administration will drain the local communities of their talent as they move to Federal jobs. The military industrial complex is now about to execute their democratic strategy. As they did when Papa Bush lost to Clinton who cut the Military budget by 30% in his first year in office, Obama will do better. Chicago just might get the 2016 Olympics as some of its key citizens will now play an important role in the nation and become players in global policy. The famed Chicago Mayor will also play an important role in national politics and will secure the Olympics for the Windy City.
The most important result of this election is the massive drop in republican voter participation and the loss suffered by the republicans in the senate. The republicans showed their lack of capacity to capture new voters, the American youth, attract diversity and be inclusive has been demonstrated in this campaign. The Republican Party must not only regroup but totally re-engineer their purpose, goals and mission. The Republican Party will never be the same after this election, it will change, and that will be the greatest measure of change and outcome of this election. Along with death of the Republican Party is the birth of the Latino / Hispanic voter and the role they have played in this election. American's will know after the 2010 census that being Brown is a good thing and having Latinos on your side might not only win you a World Series but can win your elections.
This election also sends a message that the country needs a third party that change - as we will soon find out does not happen as easily said. We will find out that the super wealthy, and multi-national corporations controlling most of the real capital in the USA will make sure that change does not mean they lose any power and wealth. Change only happens when you are truly upset and Americans are not that upset with the current conditions. If Obama would have won all but 5 to 7 states it would be a mandate and it would have been a display that Americans wanted change. But history has been made, it is proof again that America is a great country, its people are a great people. The Obama Campaign had a vision and desire for change, they maintained hope, faith and were consistent to the final day and they and the American people made history. This has been a real non-violent revolution, the beginning of a revolution of ideas, the beginning of a revolution of the American Youth and a true sign of a great people.
