MAY 1 - Celebrated all over the world, except for the USA, as the Day of International Solidarity of Workers. Today, the majority of the members in our planet, your brothers and sisters celebrate Labor Day. It is one of the few world holidays where regardless of citizenship, race color and creed all unite in remembrance of the same occasion. Chicago is the site of the 1886 Haymarket riots - in the fight for the eight-hour workday. Scores of people lost their lives in the struggle for basic rights and this event played a significant role in making this day a world holiday. They accomplished their mission and today you and I benefit from the right to an eight hour work day.
In May 1, 2003 our president declared loyalty day where we reaffirm our allegiance to our country and resolve to uphold the vision of our Forefathers. It was mission accomplished day, the mission was Iraq. But, since 2003 almost 3000 young men and women, the majority from poor American families, have sacrificed their lives on this same mission. Mission accomplished; must have meant something else, and not that combat operations had ended in Iraq as it was intended for us to believe.
Today, May 1, 2006, thousands will march in Chicago and in many cities in our country people will be in support of immigrant and refugee rights. Marching for basic rights, basic and fundamental humanitarian issues which are at risk and being decided through legislation in our congress. These laws will be voted on in congress and will change your life even if you are not an immigrant or refugee, be aware of that.
May 1, is a time to reflect on basic rights, the right to work, the right to work for a decent wage, and the right to work under human conditions. It is also a moment to commit to support the place of work, its development and protect the economic infrastructure to provide for sustainability so we may all prosper and have a place to work for decades to come. It is a basic human and world right to work and exchange labor for basic sustainability.
I would add it is the time to identify those who have lied to us, who develop, support and pass legislation under false pretense. It is time to identify those who abuse of the trust of the American people with deceit and deception. It is time to identify those who for selfish accumulation of wealth and control take our youth to war. It is time to identify those who exploit and abuse the workers round the world. It is time we identity the leaders of these work places like the Exxon-Mobil Corporation who will give retiring Chief Executive Officer Lee Raymond a retirement package worth nearly $400 million dollars. This is abuse and exploitation of the American people. The CITGO Corporation has donated millions worth of heating oil this year to poor American families; its owners have donated over $24 billion dollars to third world nations in the last 4 years. Now you know where to buy your next tank of gasoline.
May 1, 1930 - the planet Pluto was officially adopted by the scientific community as the ninth planet in our solar system. Hopefully one day we can celebrate a May 1, when we the citizens detain and send our political and corporate leaders who lie, kill and abuse the American people to Pluto. Then we can celebrate with the rest of the world a May 1, in remembrance of a mission accomplished, the mission of justice, fairness and equality, the true vision of our forefathers. Just Keep the Revolution Moving Forward.. Protest yourself from abuses - buy CITGO gasoline. Un Abrazo
