Hey Kids!
For those of you in need of an excitement filled journal entry, look no further. I think my weekend may provide you with your fill of drama...I know it gave me my fill of it for a while.
It started out as a great day. I got to work at 8 am, mad because I had to be there so early, and found out I really wasnt' supposed to be there until 12. I was kind of glad, then, that I got there at 8, because I had the evening free with my boy. If I had paid more attention to the schedule, we wouldn't have been able to see each other really. Since we were both free, we decided to go do a little shopping, have a nice dinner, and then see a movie. I bought some awesome new kicks, the boy got some new clothes...we found a very rare Star Wars toy on sale, AND we got that memory foam mattress topper/pillow set I've been wanting for a gazillion years...75% off! Then, we went to TGI Friday's for some yummy Jack Daniel's ribs. The movie was hilarious too...The Longest Yard. It was just such a good night.
When we got home, I decided to go to bed, while he stayed up for a while playing video games. I told him the ealrier he came to bed, the longer I'd make sure I kept him awake ( ) and he told me he promised he'd be in before too long, because he couldn't pass up a promise like that.
At 2:30 am, he runs into the room, throws on the light, grabs his gun and runs out. Scares the shit out of me. Then, I hear him race out the front door and all I can hear him say is, "You'd better stop right there!" Turns out, when he was sitting in the living room (which, incidentally, faces the front AND the window was open, lights on, curtains up...obvious to the outside that someone was awake inside) , the dog starts growling. Then, he hears someone running away from our front door. He ran upstairs to look out the window so he could see without the glare of the streetlamp. He sees 2 men messing with my car. They give up because it's locked, so they move over to his patrol car, which, of course, is locked. So then they get pocket knives out of their pockets and start giggling...but before they do anything with them, they decide to piss on the car. By mid-stream, my boy is out the door, badge and gun. He called his dept. to get some on duty officers sent out and was trying to get control of the situation. A few minutes went by and his back-up still hadn't arrived. He called again and found out the dispatcher (more on her later) hadn't given the call out yet.
At this point, the more argumentative of the two drunk bastards starts to get belligerent, telling JP "you can't do anything. You can't even get your fucking back-up here." And then, he tries to fight. So, JP has to restrain this guy while his gun is in his waistband...I had been watching from upstairs, and when the guy started fighting and JP had to leave his gun unsecured, I got the handcuffs and ran downstairs. I get outside and the guy starts telling JP how he's going to come back when no one's home but me and really fuck me up. "Oh, is that your girlfriend? I'll be back, and my boys and I will make sure she's fucked up real good when you aren't around sometime. You like that?" At that point, still fighting, JP got control of the guy and slammed him up against the patrol car and handcuffed him. The OTHER guy with him recognized me from my old job and started asking me if I could HELP them get out of this situation! No way. JP looked at him and said, "DO NOT talk to my girlfriend! You aren't allowed!" I looked at the guy and was like, "You know, you could be Jesus Christ and it wouldn't matter right now."
Back-up finally got there, 11 minutes later. They both got arrested. Vandalism, public indecency, public intoxication, underage consumption (for one, the other was 21), and the younger one also got charged with resisting arrest. If either of them try to fight any of those charges, they're going to go to Grand Jury, where they'll be facing all of that PLUS attempted burglary, assault on a police officer AND simple assault (for the verbal threats against me). So, JP had to take them to booking, and because the guy that threatened me has friends in our complex, he wanted me to stay awake until he got back, just in case. This guy is a local shit head, so I was more than happy to comply, considering he knows OTHER local shit heads who want nothing more than some way to get at a cop. I was so upset by the whole ordeal, I couldn't sleep anyway. At booking, the other guy (the one that knew me) admitted that they wanted to just get in our place, cars, whatever, to mess up a cop's stuff. To cause trouble...to "stick it to the pigs"...whatever. They just happened to be drunk enough to pick the only cop in our complex who was still awake.
Now, the biggest problem in this whole situation was, if you didn't catch it, the dispatcher. An off-duty officer who needs back-up has immediate dispatch priority. She waited 7 minutes to dispatch the call. Then, when she did dispatch it, she called it wrong over the radio...saying JP had them in custody already, when really he was in the middle of a fight. So, the officers, thinking they were just going to be transport, took a little extra time and didn't get there for 4 minutes. They could've gotten there in about 2. During that first 7 minutes, the situation had escalated into something that could've really been dangerous, or even deadly. Had the call been dispatched right away, an officer would've been there within 4 minutes...and the guy would'nt have had the balls to pick the fight, like he did. When he did decide to fight, JP had nowhere safe to secure his weapon. While he was restraining the first guy, if the other one would've felt as squirrelly, it wouldn't have taken much effort at all to get his gun away from him. If those would have been two people had been worse than what they were, this situation could've gone VERY BADLY. Because of the dispatcher's negligence, not only JP's life, but also mine, were placed in serious danger. This is the 2nd time she's left an officer in need of back-up in a potentially explosive situation (the first time, she left an on duty officer in a knife fight with no back up for 6 minutes). I know, 6 or 11 minutes doesn't sound like a long time, but in a situation like this, it's just enough time for something VERY bad to happen.
I have NEVER seen JP so angry. He was angry at the dispatcher...he was angry at the guys...he was angry because he was off duty, and they came to OUR house to do damage against OUR property. He was angry because the guy made threats against me and my safety. He was angry because I was placed in the middle of a potentially dangerous situation AT OUR HOUSE. It was just a really bad night. The ironic thing is, when I was going to bed just 2 hours before, he came up and we were talking about whether or not we wanted to move. His exact words were, "I'm thinking maybe we should stay where we are. I've been here almost a year and haven't had ANY problems whatsoever. We might not be that lucky anywhere else. I've never had a bit of trouble." I think we're moving now. My latest suggestion was one of those old people condo/townhouse complexes. He could be the security officer and make sure Stella gets an ambulance when she breaks her hip, and we would live in peace after everyone goes to bed at 8 pm.
I just found out today that the argumentative guy told his mother that JP assaulted him and he thought JP deserved to get fired, because an off duty officer has no right to make arrests or anything, because he's off duty. His mommy called the Judicial Board to file a complaint, and the Chief of Police laughed in her face when she said, "When an officer is off duty, he has no legal right to do anything that he would do on duty."
Police officers are sworn to uphold the law, and have the power to make arrests at any given time, on or off duty. They can assist an officer without back up during a traffic stop, etc, as well, off duty. They don't make traffic stops, but they CAN call in for an officer to make a stop if they see a potential drunk driver, or reckless driver. Of course, her complaint was dismissed, because the guy was NOT assaulted...he was restrained with as little force as necessary and has the LACK of bruises to prove it. He was very lucky he decided to pick on a police officer, as TN is very lax on the "guns for personal protection" and is very likely to let people off for shooting someone in self defense of themselves or their property. If they would've tried this stuff on a regular person's house here, their chances of getting shot or getting their asses whipped would've increased 100 fold. My boy, as angry as he was, handled the situation with the utmost professionalism...and being off duty with no audio or video recording he didn't have to be as professional as he was, believe me.
The dog also impressed me. She's normally very docile and even quite stupid...but she was ready to eat someone's face off when JP ran outside. She was in the living room frothing at the mouth trying to get outside. I should've let her eat them up. She still is growling at everybody and won't get more than 5 feet away from me when I'm home. Uber protective now.
That's all kids. Sorry for the long entry, I had a lot of detail I needed to include. How's that for drama?
