It was a long weekend of Rocky Horror. We had a friday show in the UofD Trabant movie theatre, then a saturday show in our regular theatre. Lots of fun, but tiring.

I saw "Fahrenheit 9/11" Sunday night. Including ticket, fandango surcharge,
gas, viewing and travel time this movie probably cost me about $12 and 3
hours of my life. I'd like them back.

The movie is a long opinon piece, condemning George W Bush, his family, his
friends, their ties to big business, and their ties to leading Saudi
Arabian families including the bin Laden family....

Tthose are only application pictures. They're just supposed to show my personality so I'm not really worried about making them horribly interesting. I think the bottom line is there are too many girls applying. I've decided not to apply again for that reason and because too many have already been accepted. It's no longer a special thing to be an SG. It was special when there were 150-200 Girls. As of today, there are 374. At this point, I think it would feel like I was simply putting naked pictures of myself up on the internet for the hell of it, not to be a part of something awesome. Make sense?

Where are you??? confused

Saw Harry Potter 3. The graphics and action sequences are fantastic, but the plot is so condensed, it's confusing. The chopped out all the character backstory information, so the character motivations are opaque. Think of it as a beautiful depiction of the more exciting highlights of the book. It's definately worth seeing on the big screen.

Went to kareoke tonight. The one run by Aimee's sister. The equipment was terrible, the song selection a little sparse, the food excellent, and the prices a little high. The singing was mostly horrible, with occational bursts of talent. Stephanie and Aimee were quite good. Paco was good once he found the right music for his voice (Billy Joel). Aimee's sister was pretty good. All...

Well, at long last, my house is refinanced. Finding all the paperwork they wanted was a pain, but my payment went down $100 / month, and I got some cash out of the deal. It feels like free money smile, which confirms I have no understanding of finance.

Your back!! Hey you! Sound like a good deal regardless! biggrin

Another week, another worm infecting every windows pc on campus. frown I go out of my way to avoid running any microsoft software, and it's stupid security holes still eat huge chunks of my time. I spent two days this week writing a lsass vulnerability scanner, which ment reverse engineering other scanners, sniffing smb protocol traffic, and researching wierd half-documented protocols. It's tedious and it's so...

Can anyone recommend any good melodic goth bands (Abney Park, Sisters of Mercy, Inkubus Sukkubus, etc)?

I'm tired of all my current music, and I'm having trouble finding new stuff.

The record stores around here suck. I have to go to South Street in Philly to find anything good.

I've been tring to find stuff online. It's amazing how much crap is out there. It's...

You are correct sir... the one movie quote you coudn't get was from Star Trek: First Contact.

Recomendations for melodic goth music...

Delerium. Both Karma and the new one Chimera are quite good. Poem as well.
This Mortal Coil. A bit odd, but quite pretty and moving at parts. Beautiful voice.
Colide. This band can run from soft to hard, but it's all pretty good. Sometimes evocotive of Evanescence, but often better and bigger sounding.
Switchblade Symphony. The ultimate in goth, otherworldly, transcendent gothy goth goth. Almost too much.
Cocteau Twins. Not goth per se, based on an old styel of celtic music, Cocteau Twins have some rabid fans. For otherworldly, ethereal, incredible voicing, this is it. The most amazing part is that Liz Fraser does all the vocals, and she's got a range you won't believe.
Sarah Brightman. The ex-diva has quite an operatic voice. Not strictly, or even mostly, goth, alot of her stuff is quite beautiful and melodic none the less.
The Cranes. More popish than your average goth music, the lead singers ability to sound like she's seven makes for some pretty tunes.
Joy Division. Naturally.
Hungry Lucy. A small, local band (well, not local here, but...). You can get their CD on amazon. Very pretty, unquestionably goth.
Jane Jensen. Not goth, but great stuff. You can get her CD through Amazon as well. Reminiscent of Garbage. Burner is one of my favorite albums.
Loreena McKennitt. Celtic Folk Singer. You'd be hard pressed to find a prettier voice. Half her stuff is covers of old poems and folk songs, the other half is original. Highly recommended.
Moby. A blend of techno and whatever else strikes his fancy, Moby is the master of his style.
VNV Nation. Good techno/industrial
Juno Reactor. Good techno with their own twist.

Hope that helps. I'll add any I think of later!

*The plot that connects the segments is very weak, but you're supposed to be too drunk (or something) to care.*

And that, my friend, is the meaning of life! wink

My DVD of "Sweeney Todd, the Demon Barber of Fleet Street" arrived today! I've had the soundtrack for years, but have never seen the show. I'm finally seeing it now in another window.

Too often I see stuff online that sucks, but has lots of recommendations or positive votes. Sometims I think people got paid to vote for it. Sometimes, I think they have different tastes than I. Other times, I think the voters are just plain stupid. I'd like a system where I could see who voted for something, and discount the votes of people I don't...

stiggy56, thanks for the info. Unfortunately, I hated the first movie, so I probably won't go see the second.

I'm a huge fan of the book "Starship Troopers" by Robert Heinlein, not the almost completely unrelated movie by the same name. The book is a coming of age story with some political overtones, set against the background of a futuristic war with an intellegent tool-using, alien, insectile race. The focus of the book is on how Juan Rico develops from a directionless kid into a adult dedicated to a cause outside himself. Perhaps half the book describes some of the soul searching he does while in basic training, and officer's candidate school. The movie also explores a number of what-if ideas about future combat. Particularly the idea of powered exoskeleton armor.

The movie, on the other hand, is an action and gore fest about a high school jock shooting monsters on another planet, using weapons and armor inferior to those used in the Vietnam war. The central character "Johnny" exhibits no growth or change whatsoever. It does occationally refer to some of the events in the book, but utterly misses their meaning.

I admit neither is very subtle, but they're miles apart.

I also admit I doubt the political ideas in the book would work in the real world. I think it would quickly break down into a police state as the older political leaders forgot the service ideals that earned them citizen status.

HrlyQuinn, it's just a picture I found on the web a while ago. I think it's based on a mathematical construct, then enhanced by an artist. I'm thinking of replacing it with the image of me you put up.
