Started writing some new songs today. Got an e-mail form a beautiful girl in New Mexico. Got an e-mail from an old friend that wants to get together before I leave.
Feeling better compared to yesterday. Everything I've gone through lately just catches up to me unexpectedly. It fucking sucks, but I freak out and survive. Okay, enough of my idiotic bullshit.
Studio Memory of the Week:
Elvis Costello meets Josh Clayton.
Elvis and No Doubt were recording a Burt Bacharach song in studio 2 (I don't know if it was ever released). I was in the live room after the session ended cleaning up and making small talk with Elvis, who was packing up some things. I saw Josh standing in the doorway, nervously eyeballing Elvis. Josh was a great songwriter/ singer/ human being (he was the singer in a band called School of Fish in the early 90's). He was recording an album down the hall and heard that one of his idols, Elvis Costello was in the building, and wanted to meet him. I grabbed Josh, pulled him in the room and introduced him to Mr. Costello. Josh looked like a kid meeting Santa in the mall. He told Elvis how much he inspired him to become a musician. They talked about the industry and songwriting for awhile, then Elvis graciously thanked Josh for his kind words, shook his hand, and told him he had to catch a flight.
I had never seen anyone happier than Josh in my life. I can still see him smiling over the fact that he had met one of his idols, and that Elvis was so cool to him.
I heard about a year later that Josh died from cancer. He was 32 years old and one of the kindest people. I am proud to have briefly known him and shared a moment in his life.
