So I saw the Kings of Convenience at the Double Door in Chicago tonight. It was definitely one of the best concerts I've been to. If you've never heard of them, they are a Norwegian duo who play acoustic indie pop. Earland Oye is also a producer and DJ and has worked with other cool indie bands out there. But both are extremely talented and very nice people. Their music is very original and very melodic and melancholic. If you ever feel the need to relax or feel nostalgic about past love, they are the perfect music for you. "Bittersweet" would be the word to describe them.
Anyway, the atmosphere was good. Double doors sound system is very nice. It's kinda a danky bar/venue. But it's got a lot of history and street cred. The crowd was actually polite and didn't let out drunken hiccups of stupidity. I was actually able to hear the acoustic guitars and their voices. The guys were hilarious in between songs. They are Norwegian, but they seem to understand American humor. So when they would tell stories in English with their Norwegian accent, they had a European charm to them. And as far as quality of music, it was great. They actually sound like the studio album, which was surprising because their melodies are pretty hard to sing. They played a new song they were in the process of writing. They end the hour and half set with Toxic Girl. And were cheered back to the stage to play another one of their hits "I'd Rather Dance With You." For that song, Erlend jumped, or rather guided himself onto the crowd and surfed a few feet. He sang the lead and danced the way I could only imagine a skinny Nord would. He was like Napoleon Dynamite but more reserved. And afterwards he was cool enought to spin some records for the rest of the night. But I was too tired to hang around. But I hear he's a praiseworthy DJ. Plus all the smoke was getting in my contacts. Overall, I'm glad I saw them. I love their music. And I hope that you get a chance to check them out as well. "Homesick, Toxic Girl, Gold in the Air of Summer, I Rather Dance With You" are my favorites. Trust me. I'm never wrong when it comes to my recommendations.
