I visited one of my mother's uncles today. Our immediate family is not really close to my mother's family. Sometime in the past, my mother's uncles and aunts settled in Sacramento, while she and her parents settled in San Francisco. But recently, we've been trying to stay in touch with them. Now that their children are older and everyone around me is getting married and such.
But anyway, my Uncle Joe is one of the funniest and cruelest persons. He's getting pretty old. And he's pretty close to being completely blind. But, some of the words that come out of his mouth are both caustic and hilarious. I can't help but laugh at his senility. But at the same time, I get angry at some of the cruel things he says. He built all of the houses, his family grew up in. One of his grandsons is now living in one of his houses alone. He renovated certain things about the house. I am going to stay with him for the next four weeks in Sacramento because I will be rotating through UC Davis's med center.
Well, today was the first time he saw the renovated house. And he refused to get a tour of the house. He basically sat on the couch and made comments about how his grandson tore up his hardwork. It was kinda sad. His grandson was pretty proud of the work they had done in renovating the house. But it's understandable that Uncle Joe would feel like his life's work was tampered with. But, the look on his grandson's face was pretty devestating. There was that uncomfortable tension in the room when he made those comments. Anyway, I just wanted to comment on it. In some ways, Uncle Joe stands for something pure and noble. But in other ways, he's tragic because he'll never survive in an everchanging world.
For what it's worth.
