Ok - Guy Fawkes night (deep intake of breath) - small history lesson
In the 1600's Quenn Elizabeth 1st died, and following monarchs/ the state (we had a houses of parliment by that point) were opressing Catholics. Guy Fawkes and his fellow (catholic) conspiritors decided to fight this opression by blowing up the houses of parliament - and wiping out a lot of important people from the ruling class. They put loads of barells of gunpowder in the basement - but were found out just before they going to light the fuse - they were tried and all publicly executed.
Guy Fawkes or "Bonfire night" is to commemmorate this in november the fifth. You are supposed to light a fire in your back garden (though many people dont), and burn an effigy of Guy Fawkes (almost nobody does that) and everybody lets off fireworks...and i do mean everybody - it even has its own nursery ryme:
Remember, remember the fifth of November,
Gunpowder treason and plot.
We see no reason
Why gunpowder treason
Should ever be forgot!
Most years involves a party, a few beers round a friends house and sum food (last year it was tacos - yum). Some people go to big public displays..ive always prefered small private ones...besides i get to blow shit up. The only good big one is in Lewes (an hour from me), where they "Keep it real" dress up in 16th century clothes, and burn full sized figures of fawkes and the pope!
As i said a lot of people celebrate this over haloween because it is only a few days later and is more traditionaly English!
