Step 1 - check you gas cap. If it's loose, it will trigger the check engine light.
If it's not your gas cap and your car has 80k or more miles, you probably have a bad oxygen sensor. Repair cost on that was around $120 last time I had it done.
You can buy a cheap ODB II code reader for about $50. It will tell you what triggered the check engine light and let you tell the mechanic what needs to be done.
