Firstly HAPPY NEW YEAR!
Thanks to everyone who sent me new year and christmas wishes, I hope you had a rocking time and I hope 2009 Brings all you wish for.
So I went to Knysna over the holidays.
It is on the coast about 14 hour drive from Joburg so we stayed over at The Owl House in Neau Bethister on the way to break the drive up into 2 days.
It was amazing, you can find the full story here but basically a woman named Helen Martins moved there years ago and became a recluse.
She started building these statues out of cement in her garden, mostly religious icons (all of the statues face Jerusalem)
Here are a few pics of the statues in the garden
She lived in a dark house alone so she started crushing glass, dying it in different colours and covered her walls in this glass. She used different colour glass for the big windows she created in a way that the natural light would shine through and colour her house in rich beautiful light.
She eventually went blind from the crushed glass getting in her eyes and took her life.
We went on to Knysna, a backpackers called Buffalo Bay
We met such amazing people from all over the world.
We drank,
we partied,
we relaxed at the beach,
we read books,
we lay on hammocks,
we slept.
It was exactly what I needed after a long year!
tell me about your holidays!
P.S If anyone has the new SG book ( I am waiting for my copy ) I would be superrrrrr appreciative if you would scan my pic and send it to me....
I have no idea what was used and I am DYING to know.
