Well last Wednesday I got really sick at work, fever, chills, and damn near unconsciousness. My wife took me to the ER at the Mayo, they said that my blood was Wacked! after a few tests, and a few more tests. they have ruled out Blood type cancers, like Leukemia, after a Bone Marrow Biopsy. They are now blaming a Splenic Vein Thrombosis, and I have an appointment Friday to discuss surgical options. When I asked "why cant I get anti-clotting drugs, or cant you suck out the clot" the answer I was given was "If we remove your Spleen you wont need that vein."
As some of you know, I saw the Surgical team at the Mayo this afternoon. Here is the deal. I have a "Splenic Vein Thrombosis". This was described to me in better detail today, and i shall do my best to e'splain it to those of you who care to keep up with my medical woes.
OK here goes. over the past Ten yeas I have had no less than 10 attacks of acute pancreatits, severe (those requiring hospitalization) and minor ones. During these bouts of inflammation my splenic vein has slowly been "kinked", calcified, and clotted. Due to this obstruction, blood is circulating through my body and getting to my spleen where it cannot get out (to my Liver). But alas the human body is a miraculous machine and my Spleen is redistributing the blood as best as it can. the detours that it is creating, however, are basically smaller blood vessels that are being "over filled" in order to get the blood out of my spleen. Now we are making a HUGE assumption here; that being, We're assuming my spleen is functioning normally, and the Vein blockage is whats causing all my spleen issues. These "varricies" can rupture and I could bleed to death. I could also be punched in the ribcage and my Spleen could rupture and I could bleed to death. I also have four pseudo cyst's in my pancreas, as a result of my many bouts of pancreatits over the years. Pseudo cyst's get infections and infections are bad, (especially if you are having Immune system issues).
So here is the plan, there going to remove my spleen. they cant fix the vein, and its in the way of my pancreas. they plan to remove part of my pancreas, to get rid of the cysts. I will be going under the knife in late August or early September. I will be in the hospital for about a week after the surgery, and be off my feet for six weeks or longer depending on how well I recover from having my chest ripped open and having my entrails jacked with.
