Hi Oi, Hola, Salut, and Здравствуй once again, Everybody!
I have been very happy to see so many girls writing about this topic in honor of International Women’s Day. I tried to write this once before, but it turned into a Who’s Who of the Greatest Women in modern history. So, I decided to shorten my blog by listing the MOST inspirational women (or womyn, if you prefer) in my life. It will still be long, so I won’t be able to give the why’s for each. So, ladies, THANK YOU for being awesome, you all continue to inspire me, even those who have passed beyond the wall of sleep.
My mother and grandmothers; my mother was a librarian and a teacher, one grandmother an English teacher and pianist (she was also a flapper in the 1920’s), the other a homemaker with the looks of a movie star (whose affinity for high shafted footwear and naughty youth earned her the nickname, “Boots.”
From TV: Lynda Carter (Wonder Woman) Nichelle Nichols (Lt. Uhura of Star Trek), Gillian Anderson (Dana Scully of The X-Files), Jessica Alba (Dark Angel), Candice Bergen (Murphy Brown), Ann Jillian (Jennifer Slept Here, It’s a Living, Mae West biography), Ksenia Solo (Kenzi of Lost Girl), and Lesley-Ann Brandt (Mazikeen from Lucifer).
From the movies: Mae West (She Done Him Wrong), Veronica Lake (I Married a Witch - her hairstyle! ) Kim Novak (Bell, Book and Candle, and Vertigo), Marilyn Monroe (Some Like It Hot), Carrie Fisher (Star Wars), Halle Berry (X-Men, Catwoman), Milla Jovovich (Ultraviolet, The Fifth Element) Carrie-Ann Moss (The Matrix Trilogy), Liv Tyler (The Lord of The Rings) Charlize Theron (Atomic Blonde, Gal Godot (Wonder Woman), Zoë Saldana (Star Trek, Avatar, Guardians of The Galaxy).
From Literature: Mary Shelley, author of Frankenstein; or The Modern Prometheus, one of the most influential books of all time, Anne Rice, Anne McCaffrey, Ayn Rand, Camille Paglia, and the Ancient Greek poet, Sappho.
From History: Cleopatra of Ancient Egypt, Joan of Arc, Queen Elizabeth I, Eleanor Roosevelt, Helen Keller, and Margaret Thatcher.
From Mythology: Aphrodite, the Greek Goddess of Love. Aphrodite is greatly underrated and misunderstood in modern times - she had many incarnations.
From music: Pat Benatar, Lzzy Hale (Halestorm), Terri Nunn (Berlin), Morgan Lander (Kittie), Susanna Hoffs (The Bangles), Liz Phair, Debbie Harry (Blondie), Lena Horne, Cyndi Lauper, Shakira, Madonna, Christina Aguilera, Katie Gilchrest (High Priestess), Maria Brink (In This Moment), and the girls of Thunderpussy.
From art: Olivia de Berardinis
From SG (this is the one you’ve been waiting for):
@stellamaris, @ellys, @chroi, @midnight, @lady, @francy, @felicity, @ultramarie, @olga_fotokadr, @geminisky, @mousse, @marlene, @mariafox, @starstuff_, @romany, @avecalluna,@cvtgrrl_shan, @eirenne, @gadget, @luie, @haub, @lunar, @axys, @fay, and most recently, @itsdafne, @kaliva, @fla, and @persephonepitstop. Of course, none of us would be here if it wasn’t for @missy, @rambo, and the often under appreciated efforts of @courtneyriot and other staff.
There are MANY other amazing Women who inspire me every day; especially those who have read to the bottom of this list; if you don’t see your name here, it’s not because you don’t inspire me, it’s because I had to shorten it for length. You inspire me by not being one of those girls whose book review reads, “TL; DR.”
Much Love to everyone!!
