Hi Everyone, and Happy Valentine’s Day to all those who celebrate it, and those who do not. If you’re inclined, please check out my Valentine’s Day Gift Video, which I made exclusively for all of you wonderful people here on SuicideGirls. A lot went into making it, and for all that it is less than perfect, it’’s better than the alternative: it almost didn’t happen.
I’ve been planning the video for several weeks, deciding what song to play, what to wear, practicing the song, testing recording techniques, checking the lighting, etc. I even shot a test video four days ago, to make sure everything was good to go, then I planned to shoot the actual video two days prior to Valentine’s Day, to allow time to post a proper blog.
Well, it seems that there were many forces in the universe that didn’t want me to share this. First, winter finally arrived full force in Spokane, and on Monday evening I was walking home in the snow and ice, and I decided to assist a stranded motorist by playing Wonder Woman and helping two gentlemen give a stuck SUV a push so the vehicle wasn’t in the middle of the road pointing the wrong direction and so the driver could get home safe. Well, for all that we easily got him unstuck, I strained my left shoulder - it still hurts!
However, we got about 10 more inches of snow @25cm) on Tuesday, and I had to trudge through it to get to work and back. I was so exhausted come Tuesday evening, I fell asleep right after dinner, and got NOTHING done on the video. 🥺
Left with only Wednesday night, I scrambled to get everything together, and everything seemed to go wrong: my MIDI wouldn’t sync with the Bluetooth, the top of my guitar stand literally just broke off when I picked up my guitar during a quick rehearsal, and, to make matters worse, the pain on my shoulder started messing with my accuracy. Suddenly, I couldn’t get 4 bars into a song medley I’ve played without error 100 times without making a mistake. Argh! 6 takes later, my left hand started to cramp up, so I had to quit and pick the best of my flawed performances. However, for all that I flubbed the easiest part, the overall video came out good.
So: here’s a little fun info about the inspiration for the song medley: imagine, if you would, the chaotic scramble of Bill and Ted during their “Excellent Adventure,” if you recall, they picked up Ludwig van Beethoven on the way. My inspiration came from imagining what would have happened if they also stopped in the 1970’s and picked up David Gilmour of Pink Floyd and Dave and Ludwig had a jam session in the department store. I call it, “Dave and Ludwig’s Excellent Collaboration.”
For those feeling a bit unloved on Valentine’s Day, know that I’m thinking of you; both Dave and Ludwig’s songs are sad (in A minor), especially Dave’s, which asks, “Is There Anybody Out There?” - Yes, yes, there is! ❤️
Much, Much Love to Everyone, and Be Excellent to each other!
