Busy week here in D-Land.
As longtime readers at this space will know, on Mondays I do volunteers stuff reading books to the blind (the blind aren't actually there, we just digitally record the stuff, but I have a longstanding tradition of calling it that). We have to read all sorts of materials, from novels to magazines to textbooks, but last Mondays was the weirdest ever. It was a university level anatomy textbook. And I couldn't help but thinking at first that there was no realistic use that a blind person could have for an anatomy textbook. Maybe somebody with a vision impairment has an interest and wants to learn about it and stuff, maybe.
But then I thought that I bet if they could supply enough cadavers for practice, blind people would be really good surgeons. Then I realized that it's probably unrealistic - because the sighted surgeons who do the teaching probably can't adequately teach by feel. And until they can there won't be any blind surgeons to teach the next generation. Plus, y'know, patients might get antsy if they knew the guy trying to cut out their tumour was blind.
And may I say how hard it is to sufficiently describe anatomy diagrams for people who can't see? It was the second hardest thing I have ever had to record to disc, the hardest being this kind of thing..
On Tuesday and Wednesday evenings I did stuff at the John Howard society. Tuesday I photocopied and looked up stuff and folded pamphlets for the co-ordinator. Wednesday was a goodbye dinner for the executive director. Apparently there's no replacement yet because its a very hard job to fill.
Thursday I did lots of overtime to get caught up on work, and did not leave the office until 9 pm!
Friday my parents came to town from Ottawa, and took me out for food.
This weekend has been spent getting some other work ready, which is almost done but not quite. I want to see Lords of Dogtown but won't get the opportunity, I'm hoping to take a little walk later though, because it is the warmest day of the year so far.
Although Beverly Hills is still an amazing song, the new Weezer album is a little weak overall, I think. That won't stop me from trying to get floor seats for them and the PIXIES (!!) though. My friend lent me the new Garbage cd (yeah, who knew?) and it's good but sounds a lot like the first one. Really like Boys Wana Fight, though.
But that Gwen Stefani record? Awesome. Go figure...
UPDATE:
No PIXIES tixies here. It seems that the website said they went on sale at 12 pm, when in reality they went on sale at 10 am. So by 12:04 pm when I got through, there was only 400 level left. Well, saved myself $55 bucks at least.
