Dear old room-mate,
I quite like you and it is a shame that you had to move out. you were a little bit messy and had a lot of loud friends over, but I could easily overlook that because you were a fun guy.
And it's perfectly OK for you to leave some of your stuff in the room and come to get it later next week.
What was a really bad idea though was lending the key you still have to a friend of yours so that he could spend the night in (what is now) the spare room. First of all, you can't really let somebody else stay in a room that you no longer rent. It just isn't very polite.
But what is worse is the ugly possibilities that can result when that friend comes in unannounced at 2:45 in the morning. I know NOW that the reason he didn't turn on the lights and tried to tiptoe around quietly was to not wake me and my other room-mate up. But at the time, it was a good thing that I heard the key in the lock, so I was suspicious but didn't immediately think "burglar!" Because otherwise, at the very least there would have been an embarrassing incident with the police, or at worst (and I hate to think about this) it is not impossible that I might have stabbed your friend in the dark.
yours sincerely,
D.
