Wastebasket (poem)

We wasted away, wasted so much
Time apart when we were together
Doing stuff, junk, and things
We could have invested better

I went rummaging in the waste basket
For some of thosemoments
we threw away; airwave static
Background noise, sounding regrets

Smoothed out the paper,
To see what games we used to play
With our time together
When we had less to say

I found billls and sermon notes
And almost threw them out
But in the margins...
Inbetween, I saw our games
Tic tac toe, and funny doodles
And realized there were sketches
Of how we changed our names

So I'm a trash digger, looking
Looking back,and up, and down
Finding past trash is treasure
Waiting to be uncovered, found

Moments: little discarded children
Progenies and portents
And I the rich fool
Didn't recognize the contents

We would throw value away
Consuming the costless
Now we caress those treasures
Each morning emboss this
These discarded things
These wastebasket dreams
These crumpled and priceless
Spaces in-between
