You're gonna think this is an odd thing to be classed as a happy post but I have wierd hobbies and if you know me well enough you'll know I'm just wierd in general
I GOT MY NEW SHOTGUN!!!!
Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmm tri-barrel.
Basically I like a wierd little sport called airsoft. It's like paintball for gun-nuts. All the guns are real world based and perfect replicas right down to materials used in many cases. The only difference is they fire 6mm plastic bbs at about 1joule muzzle velocity (about 328fps) instead of bullets.
Anywho, my collection got yet another new addition this week with the arrival of my Benelli M3 Super 90.
I name every gun I get based on it's personality (strange word for a gun I know but they do have them). They all get named after Norse mythological figures (easily my favourite mythological set of characters, the Romans and Greeks had nothing on them).
This one is being named Skuld, one of the Norns. She was also one of the Valkyries and was a leader of sorts to them. The reason I choose this is because during a battle, the Valkyries would descend upon the field and take the spirits of the bravest and most worthy warriors back to fight for Odin against the Giants. Skuld would determine who was worthy of this honour and instruct the other Valkyries who to take (as a Norn and a Valkyrie, she had more power than the others).
Tha Valkyries themselves were often depicted (incorrectly from what I've read) as a kind of armoured angel warrior. When I fired the shotgun for the first time, the name came to me straight away because of this. The bbs it fires are in a tight grouping of 3 shots running parallel to each other (they exit the gun using 3 individual barrels so they each have the same muzzle velocity and parallel but linked paths to target). They're bright white and they immediately reminded me of the Valkyries moving mercilessly in on their target. And since Skuld determined where they went and who they took, it seemed an apt name for the launcher of these little Valkyrie bbs!
Norse mythology rocks, it's so deep and interesting and everything is connected some way or another. Even if you just want a good story, it's worth looking at some of the tales of the greater gods like Thor.
My current collection that have been given names stands at this:
Thor - H&K G36K
Freya - H&K MP7 A1
Mjolnir - Walther P99
Skuld - Benelli M3 Super 90
Loki - Knights Armament SR-25 SPR
I have lots more items in my collection but I only name them once I've taken them out in a competition or they really scream an obvious name at me (like that shotgun did).
All in all, a super happy fun day for me. And tomorrow is Irelands biggest airsoft event ever, so the weekend is looking good!
