You know, when I was growing up... We didn't have stupid "Moms Against Everything" groups ruining all my great fun, including childrens books about scarecrows that skin people alive, little kids eating big toes they found in the dirt, and horrible horrible ghost stories.
I am talking about Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark 1, 2 , and 3. If you did not get to read these when you were a kid, then you were deprived. I got these books from the "Schoolastic" Weekly Reader. There is no way in hell these books would be made for children today. Look at the images I scanned in from this book and read on...

These are awesomely disturbing. I would love to meet the artist who drew these.
I still have the third book from when I was a kid, and last week I found a hardback copy with all 3 books. Looking through it, I'm glad I grew up when I did, because these wouldn't get sold today. Even the hardback copy I just got wasn't in the kids section.
So you might ask if I would let my future kids read this stuff, and I answer: I will lock my children in a dark cellar and force them to read this by candle light. Because, I read them growing up, and it obviously didn't warp me into a deranged person who would do anything to screw up my kids.
