Alright, so I've never been big on technology, hence I don't participate with the MySpace craze, and although I seem to have a Facebook page that I don't remember creating, I don't use it for anything except keeping up with a friend I met in college (she's great, she does web design for PETA, lives in Humboldt CA).
But I think I'm gonna give this a shot- I love SG, and this seems to be one of the few ways a guy can contribute to the SG community. My plan is to occasionally post some of the creative writing, and particularly neat research essays that I compose, just to get some feedback from the multitudes of people out there in SG land.
If it interests anybody, I'm getting a degree in English from Boise State U., with an emphasis in creative writing. I switched over about a year ago from a Secondary Education degree, after realizing I care more about writing and literature than I do about the politics of the broken American education system.
Comments are welcome. Flattery is alright, as long as it's honest reaction and not shameless glad-handing. So are criticisms, for that matter- I firmly believe that harsh criticism improves a writers abilities.
What I don't need or want is commentary from people being mean for the sake of being mean, or because you have an aesthethic problem wih my work. I don't care if you think it sucks; it doesn't mean anything to me unless you tell me why it sucks. Likewise, I don't care if you disagree with anything I have to say, as long as you tell me what you disagree with and why, so that we can have a discourse about it, if it's important.
In short (too late!)- if you have nothing productive or meaningful to say, keep it to yourself. I'm not trying to raise the tension level here, or pick arguments. Again, this is just my way of contributing to a community that I love, and am slowly becoming more involved with.
Great. Now that the social contract is in place, let's start off with something light. Here's a haiku I jotted down while waiting at a table in a hole-in-the-wall chinese food joint:
Bonk
The sharp laughter of children mingling among
The frost-bitten autumn leaves stirring in the gravel;
It's such a pure narcotic rage.
One down, more to come. I thought I'd try to post something new about once a week, and see how it goes. Maybe I'll quit after a month. Maybe I'll do this until the site closes down or I'm smitten from the earth, whichever comes first. We'll see. Thanks to all of you who read this.
