Since my trip to USA some weeks ago I am becoming more and more patriotic. Patriotic for Europe. That's kind of strange, but I love this little continet consisting of so many different people, so many different languages, so many different attitudes and ways to live, but most of them are united and many of the eastern countries want to join. (Even Turkey) Today the Irish People voted for the Nice contract and that means now the European Union will grow. Welcome Poland, Czech Republic and all the others.
Hey, what a colourful area I live in, ain't I lucky? Look at the US: every city looks similar, every suburb looks similar, every car, every store, every restaurant and most of the people watching the same tv shows, wearing the same clothes talking about the same things. Now look at Europe: get in the car, drive 4 hours in the same direction and there will be another language, another mentality, another kind of food, a totally different kind of people. And all are living in peace together and many of them interested in those who are different. Yes, I love Europe. And If I also love my Country it is for example because our chancellor won the election by saying no German soldier will ever support in a war with Iraq. That means just 60 years after most Germans accepted Nazis and were indifferent to fascism and the killing of 6 million Jews, most of us have turned into almost pacifists. I think that's great.

That said, I like to think there IS diversity in this country, but indeed, it is tough to find it, especially if you were in the godforsaken midwest. Blech! It's a horrid monotonous landscape there. Come to Boston or New York sometime! Boston is petty and small-minded, but you may actually run into people from the US who don't support military intervention in Iraq, or you might even run into ME, and I would take you to eat all kinds of diverse and delicious meals, and even show you how to find beer that a German would drink here.
I also am one of those types who gets angry and develops a little grudge, but then forgets it too quickly. Often i'm completely justified in my anger, but I just don't have the capacity to hold on to anger for too long. I'm not sure if that's a good thing, or a bad thing...
