Here follows a pretentious masturbatory exercise of interest only to those who enjoy such spectacles, or those who actually care what I did with my records. Am doing with my records. Sounds suggestive eh?

So I've been putting the records away. Trying to put the records away. They were moved out by people who didn't know why they were where they were, and returned in assorted orders in assorted boxes. Then there's my DJ box, and the box of current-rotation vinyl. Through this whole process of unpacking, I've been trying hard to sort through things, order things, ya know? No matter that, I have to put things where I'll find them again, I have to know where to look for them, so intuition rules my order.
So, here are the zones I've carved out for the records:
Old - LPs I've had since high school/college - Lynyrd Skynyrd, Pink Floyd, Todd Rundgren, Eno, Elvis Costello, Zappa etc
Classic? Old but new ot me - They'd go into old... and probably should, but they're more recently acquired and I use them more for mixing - Ohio Players, Funkadelic, Barry White
Ethnic - more like 50s/60s style ethnic, Hawaiian, South American, Yodeling, Gamelan, Folkways records
Comedy - Bob Newhart, George Carlin, Shelley Bergman, Chickenman!
Spoken Word - LBJ, Pearl Harbor broadcasts, MLK speeches, Burroughs
Spiritual - Mormon tall tales, Flight F-I-N-A-L, The Rapture, How to Develop Your ESP
Organ Music
Polka Music
Dixieland & Delta Blues & Country
Christmas - Phil Spector, Elvis, Johnny Cash
Lounge - Henry Mancini, Martin Denny, Three Suns, ya know
Children's records - I especially like the Tale Spinners series, and always The Glups, Jim Copp & Ed Brown: what maniacs!
Then there's the dance music...these are the divisions things are breaking out into as I pile them up:
Local House - San Francisco all the way- Red Melon, Greyhound, Jeno, Dano, Hipp-E
Not Local House -
- I prefer my house music deep and tweaky, Floppy Sounds, Steve Bug, Hakan Lidbo
Techno - gimme Detroit please. Jay Denham would be fine. Surgeon would be ok too.
Drum & Bass - Mick Harris rules my bass-world. Most of my dubstyle stuff ends up in here, I'm more for the low n slow bass. Twilight Circus
HipHop/Breaks - Fannypack, Madvillian, Cloudead
Pop - Mum, Tricky, Aphex Twin, KLF, Tussle, !!!
Cartoon Funk - Olav Basoski, Glasgow Gangster Funk
Then there's the sort of glitch-tech-house, on BPM and Drop Beat and labels like that, Kit Clayton, Safety Scissors
Where do I put the likes of Boom-Bip, Chessie, Coil, Nurse With Wound... Psychic TV, the Orb, Jonah Sharp, Matmos, Soft Pink Truth, Alias, mashups, Negativland, Pole...Clump em up together I guess, til they find their logical mates.
Music rocks my world.
