Last night I went and saw Brian Eno speak at Ft. Mason, an introductory lecture for the series put on by the Long Now Foundation.
Mr. Eno, as always, was witty, well-spoken, intriguing and thought provoking. He talked about the process of thinking in longer dimensions, of being in the middle of a continum rather than living a series of moments. He makes me smile so!
And I must say, I'm darn glad someone is taking it upon themselves to think through the long term. I don't know how much I care how long our species survives, but its ingenuity and persistence will keep it going a long time, anyhow. People with minds may as well assume there's going to be a need for a possible future for all these folks on the planet. This seems not so much a political mission; Mr. Eno pointed out the futility of expecting anyone who is elected to an office of limited term to have any interest in planning for more than the length of their term. Polititians need to see results before the next election, not in the seventh generation, eh?
So many Eno songs have time and place components. I had bits of Another Green World stuck in my head while sleeping, all night.
