Landmines are bad. That's pretty obvious, but I honestly thought that they were banned and that no-one still built or used them.
I'm wrong! The US hasn't ratified the anti-landmine treaty yet, and Bush has pulled back from doing so. Russia doesn't look like it's going to sign up anytime soon either, and they've got some really nasty landmines.

From 2002 through to June 2003, there were new landmine casualties reported in 65 countries. Forty-one of these countries were not at war.
UNICEF estimates that 30-40 % of all landmine victims are children under the age of 15. Mines kill and mutilate 8,000 to 10,000 children each year.
That "41 of the countries were not at war" bit makes me sad. Knowing that someone somewhere has made a bit of profit on making and selling that stuff makes me angry.
