I'm sick as a dog and generally feel dreadful. I had steak for dinner when I got back from work but couldn't taste it, which made me feel worse.
Feeling sorry for myself, I retired to the computer and suddenly decided that watching Top Gun (again) was a great idea. In fairness, watching Top Gun is always a great idea. So about half way through it I decided I needed a full flight kit for an F-14 Tomcat (it was always my favourite plane growing up as a kid around aircraft, something about it made me love it more than any other, the Top Gun link is pure awesome coincidence).
DVD finished and I started rooting around websites for specs on what I should possibly be looking for. That exercise quickly turned into finding sites that I will be purchasing this stuff from. What started out as looking for a flight suit, which I could justify owning for a couple of reasons, turned into getting every single piece of kit used by the pilots and making sure every patch I was getting was the same as the ones used in the movie (the CV-61 aircraft carrier patch was a tough find since she was decommissioned back in '92).
The list stands as follows;
Nomex CWU-27/P flight suit: ~$100
Military grade HGU-33/P flight helmet: $300
Military grade MBU-12/P oxygen mask with comms: $250
MA-2 ejector seat torso harness: $100
All nine squadron, carrier, service and name patches seen on Mavericks flight suit: $80
Total cost: ~$830
I also have a friend who does custom painting, I reckon I might get him to repaint the helmet to the authentic decals too.
Going to have to genuinely stash a few bob for this. The flight suit and the patches aren't too pricey, relatively speaking, but the bulk of the cost is in the helmet and mask. I could go for a cheap copy of a flight helmet but they're plasticy and are based on a Chinese air force helmet so they look odd.
If I sing "She's Lost That Loving Feeling" at a girl in the bar wearing all that, I'm bound to score right? It worked on Kelly McGillis?
