so since my last update i've watched Memoirs Of A Geisha 3 times. which is hard because it's a pretty heavy movie.
i think they adapted the novel pretty well.
except two of the most kind of icky details that always stuck with me, they left out.
like when she loses her virginity (it's sold of course), the doctor who buys it brings along this case full of little vials and in each vial there is a piece of gauze or cloth swabbed with blood. and each one is labled with names. she sees the names of all the notable geisha in the town... obviously impling that this doctor had bought all of their hymans in the past and kept souvenirs *cringe*
i was really hoping they'd put that in the film because it really re-enforces how icky that guy was and how highly prized geisha's hyman was.
after watching all these gorgeous, elegant, graceful women i felt like such a clumsy hippo or something.
the actress playing the major rival geisha Hatsumomo, Gong Li, was soooooo perfect for the role. the character in the book has such a presence and scares the shit out of you. she's so fucking horrible Sayuri. but god, is Gong Li stunning. and she was able to humanize the character a good deal. her face is amazingly expressive. i think i was actually most impressed with her in the whole film. one of my favorite scenes is just her standing in the rain after being caught with a man (geisha aren't allowed to have boyfriends), silently crying in the middle of the courtyard, tall in this bright red under-kimono. just thinking of that scene takes my breath away.
all around the attention to detail in this film was amazing. i was really nervous that i wouldn't like it because i adored the book, but i really really liked it.
i thought they did cut out alot of stuff but it was pretty long as is... if anything i think they should have spent more time on chiyo/sayuri's rise as a geisha. they went from her losing her virignity (which signifies one becoming a full geisha) to the start of world war II.
i need to re-read the book.
i think my other favorite scene is Sayuri's (the main character) dance. it's not the dance she did in the book, it's actually a made up dance based on kabuki, instead of one of the traditional dances geisha would have preformed.
but the scene is incredibly moving.
so yeah i also got Rent in the mail the other day but i haven't gotten around to watching it yet.
that's about all i have to say.
i'm shaking, i think it's because i haven't really eaten anything all day but i'm not hungry really.
and i've been having really strange dreams all week
